Welcome back….hope everyone is ready for 2009…and that it will be better than 2008!
In the spirit of things, Blonde MBA has undergone some upgrades (at least in MY opinion as we can all use a little change), so I want to point out a couple of things:
1. Curious about a day in the life of an MBA student? Microblogging via the Twitter feed on the right now allows me to update you every second of the day! J/k as luckily for you, my life is not that interesting…but I can at least update a little more frequently & you can see what a typical MBA student is up to!
2. Soon to come upgrades…if I don’t write them down they won’t happen:
- A resource page with some links/readings/recommendations that I happen to be interested in
- A link or page with my resume, as face it - most MBA students are job-seekers & like need to market themselves however possible…I’m sure you’ll understand!
3. As always, I welcome your comments/contributions/questions, even if it’s to tell me to write about something else…
Happy New Year! ~ Blonde MBA

Happy New Year...stranded in Minneapolis!

...at least it was semi-pretty!
So to keep being Blonde MBA (even natural blondes have to maintain a little
& to get ready for the holidays, I’m getting my hair done for the first time since going back to school. This normally dreaded experience has proven to be some much needed time for myself…
I don’t think it’s the hair styling due to the embarrassing amount of foil on my head. It probably has more to do with the stack of non-business magazines I’ve gone through…or just not thinking of schoolwork & mellowing out to wierd salon music…or the fact that us MBA students have been working nonstop for 14 weeks and need a break before finals!
Either way, I’ll enjoy this and Thansgiving break so I can hit books as needed again! I think it’s a good time management strategy!

While the term ‘dumb blonde’ is, in most cases, a misnomer (except that my actual initials growing up were DMB), as my blog does have part of the term in its title, I figured I could address the concept of dumb blonde jokes.
Simply…I can’t get enough of them. I don’t care if the term ‘dumb blonde’ is not PC, or at least hopefully not, seeing as I’m getting my MBA and all, but I love dumb blonde jokes.

As a non-dumb blonde, I only wear my helmet when biking.
So if you’re reading, feel free to comment with with a dumb blonde joke…maybe it will provide fodder for one of my posts!
~Blonde-but not dumb-MBA
(P.S. When I got married, my initials went from DMB to DMA)
Last Friday was my last day of work and I didn’t get a chance to say anything about it before we left for Arizona. While I am SO GLAD to be done with that job and will not miss ‘working’ per se (at least not 9-5), I WILL miss the people I worked with. Most jobs are probably 10-20% actual work, 80-90% dealing with people, (depending on your industry of course). It doesn’t matter how well you can perform in a job if you can’t ‘play well with others’ and be a strong part of the team.
That said, I was able to work with a strong team of office support staff. Unfortunately undervalued by management and the institution we worked for, nothing would get done without this team. I hope each of them are able to find the job satisfaction and growth they deserve, and beyond that, I hope to keep in touch with them as friends!
Blonde MBA
As I’m counting down the time until I go back to school, I’m thinking of (and having to explain to others) the reasons why I’m going back for my MBA. They just can’t seem to settle for “I want to be able to work from anywhere in the world and set my own rules”! I stumbled on the article “Should entrepreneurs be getting your MBA?” yesterday, which questions if going back to school is really necessary, when most of the business world operates on “who” you know versus “what.”
My reasons, beyond my own ambition, are simple-ish. While being a perpetual student with limited responsibility is mildly appealing (minus the no $$ part) and I already have a basic business background, I’m not surrounded by those “who you know” people - meaning, not just influential, active business leaders, but also like-minded, ambitious, creative cohorts in the field I want to be in, who will challenge me to stretch farther.
Also, I don’t really have the “what you know” part down comfortably. If I knew what I wanted to do while I was going through my undergrad, I would have paid more attention to those technical skills that would be crucial to my business. Without having much real world experience (plus not knowing where you want to go), you don’t really know what you will actually use upon graduating, i.e. paper pushing, conflict resolution, stress relief, water cooler gossip.

Ambition: "Work from anywhere in the world"
This time around, I’m ready and know where I’m aiming. And my ambition in the end…”Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” ~(Confucius)
